VENDORINSIGHT This extremely elegant and very unique family home forms a substantial part of Marden Hill House, an imposing Grade II* Listed country house that originally dates back to the 18th Century. "The property as a whole has a fascinating history, and I'd say that for us that was definitely part of its appeal," says the owner. "The house that stands today was originally built in the 18th Century, but in 1812 it was bought by the then Governor of the Bank of England who commissioned renowned architect Sir John Soane to redesign a vestibule and staircase. However, Soane went on to redesign much more, and many of the major elements of his work can actually be seen in our home."
"We purchased the property nine years ago, but we happened upon it quite by chance. We had looked at so many houses, but it was a mistake with my Internet search that lead us to Marden Hill. It wasn't quite what we had been looking for, but it was such an intriguing property that we just had to take a look, and straight away we knew it was for us."
"We came to see it on the most beautiful summers day, and as you walk in the very first thing you are struck by is the staircase that was greatly remodelled by Soane. It draws the eye right up to the atrium, which floods the space with the most amazing natural light, and those stairs lead to the 'Soane Room', which has a stunning vaulted ceiling featuring Soane's iconic starfish design; it's all just so impressive and without doubt visually stunning but also a very comfortable family home. Each of the rooms is generously proportioned and the layout has a lovely flow, so not only is it really nice for day-to-day life but it's also a great home to entertain in. We've been incredibly happy here for the past nine years."
"All of the rooms are lovely, but for me the standout feature is the view coming up the stairs and again when you enter into the 'Soane room'," says the owner. "Even after nine years of living here it still takes my breath away. The 'Soane room' is currently our dining room, however as we have a really big kitchen, we have in the past used the dining room as an extra bedroom."
This beautiful home is approached via a long carriage driveway and surrounding by around six acres of truly breath taking grounds. "Another really impressive feature of the property is the grounds," says the owner, "and the views in every direction are quite magnificent. But the thing that we have really loved is the fact that it's all very informal here, so children have space to play and nobody minds if you want to have a few friends over for a BBQ."
"We enjoy this very peaceful and extremely picturesque location and yet everything we could possibly want or need is within easy reach," says the owner. "But what's be particularly good for me is the easy commute into central London. We have the 'magic train' that goes from nearby Welwyn North and which only takes half an hour, and we have easy access to the A1, A10 and M1. I was commuting five days a week, and to be able to come back here after a day in the city was fantastic."
"This has been the most amazing family home for the past nine years," says the owner, "and I'm sure its new owners will be every bit as happy here as we have been. It's absolutely stunning both inside and out."
STEPINSIDE As one walks into the communal entrance hallway at the side of the house, you're not quite sure what to expect beyond the front door of number 6. The anticipation is well worth the wait. The feeling of grandeur and space in this hallway is immediately evident. The magnificent double staircase rises up to the beautiful galleried landing with its atrium above that floods the landing in light.
The superb family sized kitchen sits between the hall, dining room and living room and is the hub of the home with large sash windows looking down the long driveway to the front and across the gardens and countryside to the side. The kitchen has been sympathetically designed to blend original character features with a contemporary design with a huge central island that is not only great to work at but also a real social space in the home. Being so large, the kitchen easily accommodates a large dining table and still has space for a sofa and other furniture.
The living room enjoys a beautiful open fireplace and a huge bay window with uninterrupted views over the gardens and countryside beyond. A cosy room in the winter and a bright welcoming room in the summer.
One of the most impressive features of this great home is the Soane room or dining room. What a place to entertain with its spectacular vaulted ceiling with segmented starfish details with a decorative ceiling rose and ball moulding. Soane marble fire place and mantel. At the far end of the room is a deep full height bay with triple aspect windows and doors that open out onto the balcony.
The master bedroom benefits from its own luxurious en suite shower room and the second and third bedrooms are both doubles. There is a large and luxurious family bathroom and also a very useful utility/laundry room.
STEPOUTSIDE Impressively approached via a long private drive that leads to a gravel parking and turning area to the front of the property with residents and visitors parking. The communal gardens and grounds are predominantly to lawn with high hedges, mature trees and shrubs and extend toapproximately six acres of parkland style gardens. The gardens are quite beautiful and are a magical place for children to play and for adults to entertain and relax away the stresses of todays busy lifestyle. There is also a walled garden, woodland areas and a well stocked orchard. To the south is a ha ha and far reaching views over adjoining paddocks and countryside..
