VENDORSINSIGHT Beautifully positioned on the edge of the sought after village of Knebworth in the glorious Hertfordshire countryside is Longdene, a large and extremely attractive country home that also boasts a swimming pool complex, a tennis court and just over two acres of stunning grounds. "We purchased the property seventeen years ago, but I must say we had to view a fair few houses before we found the one that was perfect for us," says the owner. "In my mind every house has a particular feel, and right from the very first time we set foot inside Longdene it felt like a real family home and that is exactly what we had been searching for."
"The previous owners were here for twenty-six years so it's a house that's been well loved and they had done a super job in terms of both enlarging and refurbishing the property. In fact, when we moved here the extensive work to both the house and garden hadn't long been finished, so we haven't really had to do a thing to it; as they say, you can't improve on perfection. It looks stunning throughout, it's incredibly comfortable and the layout has offered us everything we could possibly have wanted for modern family life, and perhaps a bit more. We have formals areas such as the drawing room and the huge dining room, which have been used extensively for entertaining, and less formal areas such as the family room and big kitchen/diner where we can all gather together and just relax. In my mind it's the ideal family home."
"The house sits roughly in the middle of the plot and is surrounded by the extensive grounds, which in turn are surrounded by nothing but open farmland, so we enjoy not only a glorious outlook but also a wonderful feeling of privacy," continues the owner. "The gardens were professionally landscaped before we came here, but over time we've added to the planting to create even more colour and interest. They are without doubt a real standout feature of this property, beautiful but at the same time very family friendly, and they have provided our children with a truly magical environment to grow up in."
Favourite Room: "Everyone tends to naturally gravitate to the kitchen, so I'd say that that is the real heart of our home, but in terms of my favourite part of the house it would have to be the master bedroom suite," says the owner. "It's a huge space with a very generous dressing area and a full-size bathroom, and when I open the curtains in the morning I'm greeted by the not only a tremendous views of the garden but also the most amazing light."
Favourite aspect of the grounds or surrounding area: "Our immediate surroundings are just spectacular, but the location has also been ideal from a purely practical point of view," says the owner. "We're surrounded by a number of well-served towns, so all of our needs are catered for, and we're only half a mile from the station, so I can be in central London in well under an hour. Kings Cross in particular is becoming a real hub for the big corporations so I can only see the popularity of this location going up and up."
Memorable event (if not another favourite room or unique feature): "The house and grounds alone are just wonderful, but we've been lucky enough to also have a fabulous indoor swimming pool and a tennis court," says the owner, "so we've been able to provide our children with a really idyllic upbringing. They have been able to run and play to their heats content; they learnt how to swim in the pool and had hours of fun playing tennis. We really couldn't have wished for more."
What they'll miss most / why they are leaving: "In many ways we have decided to move because the house has achieved everything we wanted it to for us as a family," says the owner. "The children are about to fly the nest and so really it's too big for just my wife and I. It's time to let a new family fill it and enjoy it every bit as much as we have for the past seventeen years."
